review

William Mastromatteo's extremities is a play not for the feint hearted. It's a gritty drama about an attempted rape that is shocking from the outset. So much so, in fact, that the audience member next to me couldn't stomach any more and had to leave the room. Unfortunately he walked out just as the tables were about to be turned on the attacker...

Sparkplug Productions, a group made up of ex students from the University of Salford and brought together by director Darren Gordon, is exceptionally good. Casting was superb, with each character being so utterly believable that it was easy to imagine being in the front room with them, where all the action takes place. Having said that, I was very glad not to have been caught in the middle of this particular storyline...

Greg Kelly, Emma Hartley-Miller, Zoe Iqbal and Lisa Whiteside are all names you should be looking out for in the future... remember where you heard about them first! Following its short sell-out return to Taurus, there are plans for a full scale production of Extremities at Studio Salford soon - keep an eye on REALManchester for details.
